Black & White Photography and Prints of Ireland - The Black & White Photographs Gallery of Philip Pankov

Welcome to Black & White Photography of Ireland – a collection of black & white prints by acclaimed Irish photographer Philip Pankov. Philip's black and white photos have gained increasing recognition amongst black white photography collectors in Ireland and abroad due to his strikingly detailed images. His Pictures of Dublin series capture the vibrancy of Ireland’s capital city while his Pictures of Ireland portfolio depicts the beauty of Ireland's countryside where traditional Ireland still flourishes.

Touted as the "best traditional photographer in Ireland today" Philip adheres to the ideals of the black & white art photography and prints each of his black & white photographs by hand. Take some time to view the images in his Irish landscape photographs gallery, Pictures of Irish Pubs series or Fine Art Photography collection, and find yourself enraptured with the beauty of modern Ireland and these exquisite photographs.

Growing up in Russia, Philip was developing and printing his own black and white photographs by the age of fourteen. In 1996 Philip came to Ireland and has lived in Dublin ever since. Having become enamored with Ireland's landscapes, Philip was inspired to depict modern Ireland in black & white photographs. Recently Philip was awarded the prestigious Licentiate Distinction from the Irish Photographic Federation for his panel of black and white landscape photographs. After he began exhibiting widely Pankov's black and white photography rapidly garnered recognition with Irish people who were enchanted with his shamrock-free depiction of their country. Pankov's black and white prints have gained increasing popularity worldwide and are held in private and corporate art collections throughout Europe, North America and Japan.

These black and white photographs were taken on medium format Hasselblad cameras that produce large, sharp negatives. This allows Philip to be able to print his black and white photographs to a large size without losing sharpness or detail. The high level of detail in each of Philip's black and white prints draws the viewer in and leaves with the feeling of being present in the scene. Magnified by Philip's exquisite hand-printing, which results in pristine black and white photographs with subtle tones from deep black to pure white, the images display an extraordinary depth and clarity. Philip's black and white photography has been described as "An everyday view imbued with an extraordinary, almost noir-ish sense of drama," by The Irish Independent.

Traditional black and white darkroom printing is almost a lost art these days. Despite the undeniable appeal of real photographic black and white prints there are few photographers who continue to master both the art of taking photographs and the craft of printing their work very well. Philip Pankov recognizes that both elements are key to the black and white art form and continues to print his black and white images by hand. For images that are too large to print in the darkroom he offers black and white canvas prints – an option which adds texture and depth to the image while enabling Philip to offer much larger pieces.

Why black and white photography in 21st century?

‘I prefer the effect of black and white photograph - the minimised distraction, the emphasis on light, the simplicity of the images and the focus on line and form. I'm very dedicated to the craft of black and white photography and traditional darkroom printing. I could spend my whole life shooting and printing in black and white and still be learning.’ - Philip Pankov
